REMEMBERING FREDERICK R. KOCH: A TRIBUTE AT SCHLOSS BLÜHNBACH

On August 19–20, 2022, an intimate celebration was held at Schloss Blühnbach to commemorate the remarkable life and legacy of Frederick R. Koch (1933–2020). The event also marked the official introduction of The Frederick R. Koch Foundation of Austria, signifying a new chapter in the Foundation’s mission to preserve and promote cultural heritage.

Mr. Koch, a renowned American collector, philanthropist, and member of the Koch family, acquired the historic Blühnbach estate in 1988. Nestled in the dramatic alpine landscape of Tenneck, Salzburg, the 17th-century Schloss, once owned by figures such as the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg and the Habsburgs, was meticulously restored under his direction. It became a deeply personal project and a lasting testament to his passion for architecture, European decorative arts, and historical preservation.

The weekend brought together family, friends, scholars, historians, and supporters of the arts to reflect on Koch’s wide-ranging cultural philanthropy, from major institutional gifts to his restoration of significant landmarks such as Blühnbach. Guests explored the beautifully restored rooms of the Schloss and viewed curated exhibitions featuring highlights from Koch’s extensive collections in art, architecture, and performance.

“The Foundation’s mission is rooted in Mr. Koch’s vision to preserve, inspire, and celebrate cultural heritage,” said a Foundation representative during the event. Attendees were also offered a preview of forthcoming educational and creative initiatives to be centred at Blühnbach.

The celebration not only honoured Frederick R. Koch’s life and achievements but also underscored Schloss Blühnbach’s emerging role as a living monument, where history, art, and philanthropy continue to converge under the stewardship of the Foundation he so passionately shaped.
